Developed apparently simultaneously by toymakers Morris Michtom in the U.S. and Richard Steiff under his aunt Margarete Steiff's company in Germany in the early years of the 20th century, and named after President Theodore Rossevelt, the teddy bear became a popular children's toy, celebrated in story, song, and film.

Bear populations were once found in healthy numbers throughout Switzerland, as well as most of Europe. So long a part of the natural landscape that the Swiss capital Bern founded in the 12th century, is named after the bear, with the animals today prominently featured on the city’s flag and coat of arms.

After a 100-year hiatus, it seems that bears may be coming back to Switzerland. Well, at least one. In the summer of 2005, the first brown bear was sighted in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, the eastern most part of the country just shy of the border with Italy and Austria. For some, the return of the bear was marked with great excitement, for others, a sense of apprehension.
